I subscribe to google alerts of news feeds related to beauty pageants. In the past few months, since I have been receiving these news alerts about anything pageant-related, two former Miss Universe seem to be the ones that get more written about. These are Jennifer Hawkins (from Australia) who almost every single day gets mentioned in the Australian press, and from India, Sushmita Sen, who has been in the news quite recently because of some problems with taxes. Judging fro these google alerts, the countries that seem to be mostly interested in these pageant news are India, Philippines, Vietnam and Australia.

Where are Magali and Mayra?

After the big announcement was made a couple of weeks ago about the change of the Miss Universe Puerto Rico pageant directors, we haven't heard or seen much of either Magali Febles and Mayra Matos. As it is well known to everyone, Magali was dethroned from her role as pageant director starting next year. However, she is still responsible to train the current Miss Puerto Rico Universe. Magali has been very quiet and we have only seen a few pictures of Mayra but nothing else. Very different from last year when Ingrid Rivera's image was everywhere.

Is this an strategy? Or just the sad reality that Magali may not have as much support this year to properly train our beauty queen? Is Mayra being trained at all? We all know that Mayra is a strong candidate but she still needs to improve a few things like her catwalk and her body. Is Magali giving up or is she preparing a big surprise to end her "reign" with a blast? We'll see how this drama develops. For now, I hope that Mayra is not affected by this.

Although I was really disappointed that Tatiana del Toro didn't make it to the first 3 finalist on last Wednesday, now that American Idol is in full force and we have our first set of top 12 finalists, I thought I review all the pictures of the 36 hopefuls competing for the top 12 spots and choose my top 5 most beautiful guys and girls among the 36 finalists. New Puerto Rican beauty queens

Three new beautiful girls will represent Puerto Rico and USA in diverse pageants. The announcement was made by the paeant directors this week. The three beauty queens are:

Angelica Medina: will represent Puerto Rico in the Miss Intercontinental pageant
Angelica Medina

Yolimar Sachez: will represent Puerto Rico in Top Model of the World
Marcelle Lage: will represent USA in Miss Intercontinental

Judging from the pictures that were posted, Angelica Medina seems to be a wonderful candidate, someone who should consider participating in Miss Universe Puerto Rico.

Marcelle Lage, who competed about two years ago in Miss Puerto Rico Universe, has improved a lot and looks very beautiful.

Oscar is just another beauty pageant.

So the Oscars are this Sunday, February 22 and everyone is doing their predictions, including me. Since every actor dreams of receiving the prestigious Oscar statue at any point of their careers, I would say that the Oscars are the beauty pageants of the entertainment world. So, who would be crowned on Sunday as Hollywood's new beauty Queen or King?

Best Picture: It's Bollywood power baby! Slumdog Milionaire will get the golden tiara and everybody's tears of joy. My sentimental pick would have been the wonderful, powerful MILK.

Best Director: For the past few years (or decades) the winner of the Director's Guild is the eventual winner of the Oscar for Best Director. So, it will go to Slumdog's Danny Boyle. Again, my sentimental pick is Gus Van Sant for reminding us of the power of speaking out in MILK.

Best Actor: It's gotta be Sean Penn for MILK as he disappears in the role of Harvey Milk. Sorry, I didn't buy the hype with Mickey. I thought he played himself throughout the whole movie. People shouldn't get Oscars for a comeback.

Best Actress: Really tough category but I think Meryl Streep will win it as she represents all mature actress who can still make it big in the box office (and she also was quite amazing in the role of the truth-seeking raging nun with her own set of doubt in DOUBT). My sentimental pick is Anne Hathway, who was simply mesmerizing as a former junkie with a heart and a tragic secret.

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger will win for his scary and creepy turn as The Joker. My sentimental pick is James Franco (wait, he wasn't nominated, well she should have for a tender performance as Harvey Milk's lover).

Best Supporting Actress: It's going to be Penelope Cruz because she has won almost every other award in this category. My sentimental pick is a tie: Marisa Tomei and Amy Adams. Tomei was so subtle and real as the stripper who knows is too old for the job but has no choice but to continue doing it and Adams is fabulous as the nun whose strong moral values ignite the fiery battle between nun and priest in DOUBT.

Maldeamores (Lovesickness)

I just recently watched the Puerto Rican movie, Maldeamores (Lovesickness). This is a cute film (produced by no other than Benicio del Toro), directed by Carlitos Ruiz Ruiz and Mariem Perez Riera and starring a strong group of actors from Latin America. The plot revolves around three different stories (a married couple and their son traveling to the funeral of the woman's grandmother; a very unusual marriage proposal that turns into a kidnapping of an entire bus; and a hilarious threesome composed of senior citizens). All the stories deal with being lovesick with either the right or wrong person.

The most effective one is the story with the three elders, magnificently portrayed by actors Sylvia Brito, Miguel Angel Alvarez and Jose Luis "Chavito" Marrero (who just recently passed away). This combo of amazing actors give the film its heart and pulse and its most romantic moments.

The most touching moment of the movie is the one you don't get to see unless you check out the alternate endings of the DVD. This is the final image of the lovesick-kidnapper as he lays on the floor, gunned down, with his love dream shattered. I am not sure why this powerful moment was deleted from the original film but you get to enjoy it in the DVD. And Fernando Tarrazo, who plays the married couple's son, Ismaelito, is a true revelation.

Sexy or Tasteless?

These are pictures that were recently posted in one of the message boards of Dayana Mendoza. I am not sure if they are before or after she was crowned Miss Universe, but the pictures are quite revealing, perhaps too much. I haven't seen these before but they don't seem very "artistic" to me in fact they look quite vulgar, specially the one sitting down. Dayana is such a beautiful girl that she doesn't need these types of pictures to show her assets. The picture of her almost nude that caused the big controversy at the beginning of her reign as Miss Universe looked more classy and elegant than these two pictures. But I am sure there is a lot of people out there who may find these pictures sexy. Well, you be the judge.

Mega TV Puerto Rico to broadcast Miss Mundo Puerto Rico

This week, the Miss World Puerto Rico Organization and executives from MEGA TV Puerto Rico, a TV network, announced that they are joining forces to bring to the TV audience the final night of the Miss World Puerto Rico pageant. As we all know, in the last few years, Puerto Rico has placed in the finals or semifinals of the Miss World International pageant and this has brought a new interest in the local pageant. The selection of Miss Mundo Puerto RIco will take place on July 23. I wonder if a TV reality show is in the plans now that Por La Corona, WAPA TV's show, looks like is not happening due to the recent changes in the Miss Puerto Rico Universe franchise. Carisheila May Kaujpers is not the new Miss Philippines Universe like I had posted a few days ago. At least not yet, although it would be a big mistake to ignore this girl's beauty and potential for Miss Universe. It looks like someone posted it in one of the message boards incorrectly and I fell trap of the wrong information. The pageant is not until March, so then we'll find out who will represent Philippines in Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International. I'll be rooting for Carishiela for Miss Universe. Toddles and Tiaras

TLC's new reality show, Toddlers and Tiaras, is a little bit creepy, quite insane at times and very revealing about the kind of people who are into pageants for kids. That's why I can't stop watching it, even if every time I see one of those poor, innocent girls parade in adult-like evening gowns or tiny bathing suits, I cringe a little thinking about poor JonBenet Ramsey.

What seems to be clear from the first episodes is that it seems that most of these girls doing these pageants are not that into it. They seem forced and not fully happy about having to learn routines or dance in front of all these crazy adults. It is their frustrated moms who are responsible for those scary, frozen smiles in their child's faces.

From the stage dad who makes his daughters evening gowns and still apparently has enough testosterone in him to procreate with his wife two children to the 47 year old geeky stage mother parading in a bathing suit and declaring that she felt beautiful, these stories make this new TLC show so much fun to watch.

Miss America's comeback

A new Miss America was crowned recently but is seemed that no one really cared among beauty pageant fans as no big fuzz was made about it in message boards. However, TV viewers seemed to care making it the highest watched cable show of the evening.

According to Fourpointsmagazine.com, approximately 3.5 million people watched the broadcast on TLC. It looks like the reality show around the pageant helped to invigorate the ailing pageant and final night telecast. It's nice to see such an important pageant and a national landmark get a comeback.

It would be crazy not to do everything that could be done to have this beautiful girl fulfill her dream of representing Puerto Rico in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant. With the recent removal of Magali Febles from the Miss Puerto Rico franchise, many worry about the future of our beauty queen. According to the press releases, Mayra will compete in Miss Universe under Magali's wing. But, what would that mean? Is she going to have the same advantages and training that other former Miss Puerto Rico had? Is there any sponsors left that would want to work with Magali now that she doesn't own the franchise anymore?

We just hope Mayra is not wasted in this sea of trouble.

Rumors in the internet seem to suggest that the Miss Universe 2009 pageant will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada. I wouldn't be surprised since Las Vegas has been the host city for Miss USA since last year. The pageant is rumored to take place at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Resort. That would be great as Las Vegas is just a 5 hour flight from NYC!

Miss USA returns to Las Vegas in 2009!

After the success of the last Miss USA in Las Vegas, the Miss Universe Organization had decided to go back there next year. They just signed a two-year contract that will bring the Miss USA pageant back to the Planet Hollywood and Resort & Casino. I was Desiree Lowry's teacher

In Puerto Rico we all love and admire Desiree Lowry, not only because she was a former Miss Puerto Rico during the Anna Santiesteban years but also because she made our country proud when she became a finalist in the Miss Universe pageant. Even now fans and missiologists think Desiree should have won that year. Desiree was the perfect beauty queen, full of poise, extreme elegance, beautiful face, confidence and intelligence.

We also admire Desiree because she then became a Puerto Rican fashion icon, TV presenter, producer and business woman. She has kept through the years an image of elegance and intelligence and she is also seen as a wonderful role model to young women. She also has managed to stay away from vulgarity and scandals and has created a very nice family with her husband (and business partner) and her two kids.

I am proud to say that I knew Desiree when she was a High School student at a private school in Isla Verde where I used to teach Drama many years ago. Not that I am that old as I became a teacher right after I graduated from College so there is not decades of age difference between us. At the time, Desiree was my student but I also trained her for Spanish and English Forensics competition. She was also beginning her modeling career and once in a while this will take her away from drama class or rehearsals, but she will always made up for it.

Desiree was a responsible, caring student. Even though she was already being recognized as a model, she was down to earth and a good student. She was also a talented actress who participated in a few of my plays in important or lead roles. I read once that she met her now husband, Roberto, also a student at the same school but different years, during a school play, which I believe may have been one of mine.

One time during rehearsals I asked her if she would ever consider participating in Miss Puerto Rico, to which she responded that she didn't know. Beauty pageants didn't seem to be her thing at the time, but school, drama and her boyfriend at the time were. What I remember of Desiree is that she was just a typical high school student.

I haven't seen her in many years but I have followed her path like everyone else, through TV, magazine covers, interviews etc. I was proud to know her then and even more proud now to see where she's gotten through the years.

Magali is out, Desiree is in!

Like a bad reality show, Magali was booted out of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe franchise by no other than Donald Trump and the Miss Universe Organization. For months now there were rumors and speculations around this, but many thought that like cockroaches, Magali's reign over the Miss Puerto Rico Universe franchise will keep on going.

The new owners, former Miss Universe finalist from Puerto Rico (and former student of mine) Desiree Lowry, and TV producer, Luisito Vigoroeaux, have lots of experience and a genuine desire to make this a successful franchise. According to both, there are many exciting plans for the franchise forthcoming. So, now, we just need to wait and see.

As for Magali Febles, no one can deny all the successes that she had during her time but like Obama says: It's time for a change. She will continue as director of the Miss Dominican Republic Universe franchise and I have no doubts that she will be a strong competitor.

It has also been confirmed by the Puerto Rican press that Mayra Matos, current Miss Puerto Rico Universe, will indeed compete in Miss Universe 2009 under Magali's guidance.

After a two month hiatus from blogging I am back! I am sorry to not continue writing in the last two months but my life got a little hectic with family, holidays and work. But now, I promise, I will keep it up.

A couple of big things have happen lately and I will be commenting on those all this week. News about Miss Universe and Miss Puerto Rico.

As you will see, my blog is still primarily about beauty pageants and everything beautiful, but I am also writing about what gets my attention in pop culture. So expect posts on TV shows, entertainment, theater, music, you name it!

Miss World- Mexico wins Beauty Beach Contest

I am back after a few days off from blogging due to Thanksgiving holiday with family. After two days of heavy cooking and a week of hosting what seemed like everyone in the world, I am back to my writing.

Beautiful Miss Mexico won Saturday's Beach Beauty award for best in swimsuit amount the 100 plus girls competing in the Miss World 2008 pageant edition in South Africa. Among the 10 finalists was our very own Ivonne Orsini, a first for Puerto Rico since this fast-track competition started a few years ago.

Mexico has been very close top the Miss World crown in the past few years placing among the top 5. Would this be their year? I rather see beautiful Anagabriela win the crown than over-hyped girls like Russia and Ukraine.

As for Miss Puerto Rico, she is making waves in South Africa and surprising many of her local detractors. She looks great and her placing in the swimsuit contest definitely consolidates her status as a great contender and a favorite. We'll we watching her very closely as she continues in the competition. Good job Ivonne!

Miss Universe Dolls

Here is another "re-cycled" post from August about my collection of Miss Universe dolls.

When I was introduced to the "magic kingdom" (and I don't mean Disney) of the auction world, EBAY, I obsessively began collecting Barbie dolls. In my daily search of vintage "Barbie" dolls I kept running into rare Miss Universe dolls. To my surprise, I found 4 different types of dolls that were manufactured in different years with the name Miss Universe.

With time my "Barbie" phase waned and I ended up selling my entire collection of Barbie dolls except for a vintage Bubble Cut Barbie that was a gift from my partner, Matt. And of course, I also couldn't get rid of my Miss Universe dolls collection.

Except for one doll manufactured in 1984, which I believe was linked to the Miss Universe organization, all the other dolls don't seem to be. The earliest one seems to date back to the 50's or early 60's and is reminiscent of those old, scary dolls that close their eyes when they are laying down.

One of them is a 6 inch red-haired doll similar to the popular 70's doll, Dawn.

Another doll, a brunette wearing a golden evening gown and the Miss Universe sash, was supposedly sold at gas stations around the country.

And of course,there is the one from the 80's, a blonde beauty who looks a lot like Miss Universe 1980, Shawn Wetherly. She even has a tiny replica of the famous Miss Universe tiara, that was replaced a few years ago.

Around the time that Marisol Maralet (first Puerto Rican Miss Universe) was crowned as Miss Universe 1970, they made a doll inspired on her. I remember that the doll was sold in stores and in pharmacies in Puerto Rico but being a boy I wouldn't dare asking my mother to buy it for me of course. Many years later I tried unsuccessfully to find it on EBAY or anywhere else.

I didn't get the Marisol doll but I got, many years later, a Dayanara Torres' (Miss Universe 1993) singing doll, a gift (of all people) from my mother.

Even though Ukraine continues to be in the top lists of many, including betting houses, Misses from Russia, Venezuela, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Spain, Trinidad & Tobago are beginning to bubble up and getting a lot of attention. There is three more weeks of events before the final night, so favorites could change and many surprises can happen. Miss World - Beauties visit Soweto

The 112 contestants for the Miss World 2008 title visited the city of Soweto where they visited the Hector Pieterson Museum, in memory of the 13 year old killed during the 1976 Student Uprising in Soweto. Miss World - The Board Game

Since we are entering Miss World mode, I thought about re-cycling this post from August 2008 about the Miss World board Game:

While we we wait to hear news about the new hosting country for the Miss World Pageant, I would like to tell you about the Miss World Game I found on EBAY a few years ago. I believe this game was sold in the 70's and it was registered trade mark of Mecca Limited. This game board, manufactured in England by Denys Fisher Toys Limited, was described on its box as "All the glamour, tension and excitement of the Real Miss World Contest." The board included 4 dolls (about 5 inches tall) in swimsuits that represented different countries. The purpose of the game was to dress four contestants, travel the world (on a world tour just like the real Miss World) and win the coveted crown (also included).

One time some friends and I attempted to play the game and as we embarked in the world tour we got bored pretty soon (I hope that's not the case with the real Miss World). I am not giving up and I am still hoping to revisit the experience with my 6 year old niece when she comes to visit.

Vietnam will go to Miss World

After weeks of controversy and speculations about whether they will send a representative to Miss World or not, an announcement was made that the second runner-up to disqualified Miss Vietnam 2008 Tran Thi Thuy Dung will replace her. The new Miss Vietnam is 19 year old, Duong Truong Thien Ly. If you recall, Dung was disqualified when it was found that she has lied about having graduated from high school. Two former models turned actors turned TV producers are joining forces to create a new TV reality show called "True Beauty." The premise of this show is beauty pageant that focused not in the external beauty but the inner beauty. 10 people will be judged every week as to who has the most inner beauty.

I guess it is all about who you are as a person rather than how you look. Of course, that's easy to say for beauties Ashton Kutcher and Tyra Banks, who are co-producing the TV show which should be airing in January of 2009, as both have benefited a lot from their looks.

The Miss Universe Organization recently announced that the Miss USA pageant will return to Las Vegas next year. This year, the pageant was held in the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. They just signed a 2-year contract that will bring the pageant and final night broadcast to this amazing resort and city. Miss Spain wins Miss International!

Miss Spain was crowned this morning as the new Miss International. Her runner up was big favorite Miss Colombia. This is Colombia second 1st runner up finish in two of the three main beauty pageants this year.

Missosology.org has already published their first list of hot picks for Miss Universe 2009 even though the pageant doesn't even have an official date yet and it is months away. However, this web site usually starts early on and they are very good at picking girls who end up being in the finals. The initial list is topped by Miss Turkey, followed by newly crowned Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Venezuela. Not bad choices. We'll see how this list changes as we continue to see new contestants.

Puerto Rico's delegate for the Miss World Pageant in December is ready to enter the competition. Her preparation has not only being physical; but also we have seen an improvement in her projection and public speaking skills.

I never get political in this blog but because tomorrow is Election Day, perhaps one of the most important and historical races, I an asking everyone to go out there and vote!

And this seems to be the message that the Miss Universe Organization is trying to send. According to this article in MSNBC, Paula Shuggart, President of Miss Universe Organization, is giving time off to Miss USA and MIss Teen USA to go vote tomorrow. Miss USA, Crystle Stewart, will be going back to Texas to exert her right to vote. The organization is also allowing its employees to take some time off during the day tomorrow to vote.

The article also talks about whether Election Day should be national holiday (it is in Puerto Rico) and that many employers don't give time off to their employees during the day to vote so people need to do it before they go to work or after work. Read more about this at www.msnbc.com.

Miss Puerto Rico - My dream

When I saw this picture in the message board I almost cry. What an amazing trio of beauties! Unfortunately, only one won the crown.

As we all know, the one on the left won. Mayra is stunning and judging by the positive comments in other countries' message boards about her selection as Miss Puerto Rico Universe, she will be strong competition in Miss Universe next year. With Mayra we have a chance to shine again in this pageant.

The other two girls, San Juan (Jennifer) and Vaga Baja (Ediebel), are stunning as well. It makes me sad thinking that we may not take advantage of these two beauties in other international pageants. With Jennifer I would send her to Miss World or Miss International next year, but she needs to focus on being more natural. With Ediebel, she could easily go to Miss Earth, Miss International or Miss World with more preparation and work on her body.

It's too bad that a beauty pageant powerhouse country like Puerto Rico we continue to fail to shine in smaller pageants by sending unprepared and unattractive girls to these competitions when we have so many gorgeous girls like Jennifer and Ediebel out there. I know it is the fantasy of many who follow these pageants to see one single competition in which the top three girls compete in Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International. This year alone, in the Miss Puerto Rico Universe competition, we had so many wonderful girls that we could have secured nice placings in these and other pageants next year.

I wish Magali and Wilnelia will join forces next year to have one single competition just to select the best two for their respective franchises. Then they can do whatever they want to do to prepare the girls on their own, no need to collaborate there. But with one single competition, it will be the best of the best competing for more than one crown. It will attract more girls and the quality would continue to grow.

I just saw the video of Mayra Matos, Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2009, in the Puerto Rican TV show, And Pa'l Cara, and she demonstrated that she is not only a beautiful girl but also extremely smart and eloquent. She projected herself with confidence and a very nice and sweet disposition. And those eyes, those beautiful, expressive eyes prove that you don't need to have green or blue eyes to get attention.

In the interview she indicated that she just began her training with Magali Febles. I do hope that Magali has learned from the last two years and that she will have a different focus with Mayra because she has a lot of potential. I am looking forward to follow Mayra's journey throughout her reign and preparation for Miss Universe.

Improving perfection?

Very soon the new Miss Puerto Rico Universe, Mayra Matos, will begin her training and preparation for the Miss Universe pageant. Magali and her team will assess the new beauty queen's weaknesses and strengths and will decide what she needs to be the best competitor. Magali already claims that Mayra doesn't need any corrective surgery. That is good news as she doesn't seem to really need anything in that area.

What other areas should the new Miss Puerto Rico Universe improve? Here are some suggestions:

She should get fit and tone her body. She should have no trouble in achieving this. She has a great height and is naturally slim, so all she needs to do is tone her muscles so she looks firmer and work on her abs.

Her teeth. Maybe some minor correction so she has a better smile and her front teeth don't look too big or give the impression she as an overbite.

Maybe gain a pound or so, she looks too thin and bony on her face. It's not a healthy look.

Public speaking: She is fine in this area. Her press conference performance was very good. Work on developing confidence and be more quick (and I don't mean fast) with her answers which is what really impresses judges.

Catwalk- Her swimsuit catwalk was forced and awkward. She should learn from Miss Santurce and Miss San Juan to be more fierce. Her evening gown's catwalk was great.

Other than that, this girl is quite ready for Miss Universe.

Miss San Juan - The one that got away

Now that we have a new Miss Puerto Rico Universe, many fans like me who followed and supported the first runner-up, Jennifer Colon from San Juan, are sad not see her represent our country in an international pageant. Not to say that I am not happy with the selection of Mayra Matos as the new Puerto Rican delegate in Miss Universe next year but I still believe that Jennifer Colon is a great delegate as well. Mayra was much better than her on Wednesday night during the finals, she had the momentum and her final answer was crucial, but Jennifer can't and shouldn't be wasted.

She was such a strong competition to Mayra that she was booed throughout the pageant for no reason but the fact that she could take away the crown. She was a fierce competitor but perhaps she projected herself way too over confident. That, and the reality show which projected her in a negative way, created this persona of a diva that probably was not the real Jennifer.

Her beauty, elegance, amazing catwalk and projection, and her strong public speaking skills, should be put to good use. Jennifer should consider competing in the Miss World Puerto Rico pageant next year. She would be a different type of queen to send as they usually like to go with beauty queens that look like Wilnelia Merced, the only Miss World from Puerto Rico. My recommendation to Jennifer is that she tones down her projection by looking more accessible to the public and that she avoids using extensions that make her look artificial. She looked so radiant and younger during the preliminaries with her loose hair and the red evening dress. She should also work on elaborating her answer a bit more so there is more content to them and to look more natural.

So, I look forward to seeing Jennifer try again in either Miss World or Miss Puerto Rico Universe again. She deserves a second chance.

Miss Puerto Rico Universe - The good, the bad and the very bad

As you all probably know by now, the new Miss Puerto Rico Universe is Mayra Matos from Cabo Rojo. The 20 year old, the message boards' darling and a front-runner, was crowned by Ingrid Rivera last night. The broadcast and the show was full of good things and bad things. Here are a few of my observations and comments:

The good:

The crowning of the new Miss Puerto Rico Universe. Very well deserved! Best overall performance last night.

Zuleyka Rivera as hostess. She looked radiant in her gold evening gown and was refreshing to watch. A true professional, she looked like she has done this before.

Ingrid's opening number dance. Very nicely done.

For the most part the top 20. What an amazing group of beauties with along with Cabo Rojo, San Juan, Adjuntas, Catano and Santurce shining throughout the evening.

The beautiful Dayana Mendoza, Miss Universe, and former Miss Puerto Rico 1971, Beba Franco, as judges.

The Bad:
Braulio Castillo as conductor. He kept making mistake and screaming. Braulio; that's why they give you a microphone, so you don't have to yell.

Miss Bayamon's green panties. Did we have to see that?

Ingrid Rivera's hair do when crowning the new queen.

Of the top 20: Barceloneta (looked vulgar); The fast-track winners (except for fabulous Miss San Lorenzo) took the slots for four other deserving candidates like Morovis, Luquillo, Gurabo, Culebras and Quebradillas; Arecibo looked angry. Not sure why she was there.

All the musical numbers and all their lip sinc.

The Very bad:
The terrible music playing during the evening gown competition. Inappropriate for this section.

The opening number with the"jibara" dresses. It lacked excitement.

Caguas fall (not her fault)

The audience booing Miss San Juan. Completely undeserved!

The fact that Miss San Juan was 1st runner up and didn't win (but we always knew one of them was going to be wasted).
WAPA AMERICA's terrible airing with sound and image problems that made me think I was watching an amateur show. TERRIBLE! You wasted my money!!

Mayra Matos is the new Miss Puerto Rico Universe!

After weeks of speculation and anticipation, Puerto Rico has a new queen, the beautiful Mayra Matos, Miss Cabo Rojo. Mayra bested 70 other delegates from all over the Island in what many consider a fierce battle of beauties. The first runner-up was Miss San Juan, another strong candidate.

Mayra will represent Puerto Rico in the Miss Universe pageant next year.

It was a exciting night even though us watching the pageant through WAPA America had trouble with the transmission. Quite annoying when we are paying extra to get this channel. Very disappointing after all the hype around this new channel.

The pageant was long with too many musical numbers and too much of the three hosts (including the gorgeous Zuleyka Rivera, Miss Universe 2006). The current Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza was a a guest and a member of the panel of judges.

Through the competition, Miss Cabo Rojo and Miss San Juan clearly dominated, but it was the final question what determined the eventual winner. Mayra's answer had more content and she looked more confident.

After a weak swimsuit performance for Miss Cabo Rojo (she looked awkward in her maneuver of the veil), she excelled in the evening gown portion by wearing a flowing white dress that made her look like she was on the air. Her catwalk was impeccable and I knew at that moment that the night was hers. In my opinion, Miss San Juan had the best swimsuit performance and was great in her beautiful silver gown, but her answer was too quick and vague.

Congratulations to Mayra Matos for a well deserved win! Starting tonight, I am a fan!

Santurce was 2nd runner up (a great surprise as she was amazing throughout the evening).

I just hope Jennifer Colon, Miss San Juan, is not wasted and that she gets to compete representing her country in an international pageant in the future. Perhaps, Miss World?

Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2009 - The front-runners

After weeks of speculation and anticipation, the most competitive edition of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant will finally come to an end this Wednesday, October 22, when the new beauty queen will be selected. After the preliminaries on Saturday night it became apparent that Miss Cabo Rojo and Miss San Juan are still considered the two front-runners for the coveted crown.

I tend towards Miss San Juan as I find her to be extremely beautiful and with an edgy personality. She is also quick and a very good communicator. To me she was the best in the swimsuit competition. Her body was firm and toned and her catwalk was the best of the evening. I think she will be refreshing and exciting to watch as the new queen. In evening gown, I have to say I wanted more. Her dress was beautiful but too safe. I would have love to see her in something more striking. I have a feeling we will on Wednesday night.

Cabo Rojo is indeed beautiful and regal. She knows what she's doing, however, her swimsuit competition was weak not because her projection was affected by her veil getting stuck in a nut but because her body didn't seem to be that fit as others in the competition. She is tall and has beautiful, long legs, but I keep saying that height is not everything. You need to stand out and I wonder if she will with the same intensity as Miss San Juan would in an international competition as Miss Universe. Still, I think she would make our country proud if she ends up being the new queen. Her evening gown performance was great although I thought she was trying to imitate Miss Venezuela and Miss Colombia at the last Miss Universe by playing with her dress like she did. Her gown was pretty but perhaps too casual.

Without any doubt, Cabo Rojo and San Juan, have everyone talking in the message boards, good or bad. I have been clear that my favorite of the two is Miss San Juan but I do recognize that either one of them would be a great representative of the Puerto Rican woman in Miss Universe.

If there are no big surprises and either one of these two win the night, I will support them from the moment Ingrid Marie Rivera puts that tiara on her successor's head. An then I will begin to wish that the 1st runner-up will try again in either this or other pageant like Miss World.

This is not a sure thing. Girls like Vega Baja, Rio Grande, Culebra, Ponce are a strong threat against these two. And of course, there are those veterans who have proven their quality in international pageants like Adjuntas and Santurce. Anything can happen on Wednesday night. I only hope whatever happens we end up with the girl who can stand out in a sea of gorgeous women from all over the world.

A new Miss Puerto Rico Universe is selected tonight!

After weeks and weeks of anticipation, we are finally going to see one of the 71 candidates to the Miss Puerto Rico Universe title crowned tonight. The show will air at 7:00 pm via WAPA TV (WAPA America in some states).

Tonight is also the final evening for Ingrid Marie Rivera as Puerto Rico's beauty queen. Without any doubt, Ingrid's reign was one full of controversy and disappointment for her and her fans. Beginning with her triumph a year ago, when many accused her and Magali Febles of fixing the pageant results to the pepper spray scandal that got worldwide attention to finally not seeing Ingrid place as one of the semifinalists in the last edition of the Miss Universe pageant. I wonder if Ingrid would have anticipated all of this to happen she would have gone through it? I think she said she would.

Ingrid was a wonderful representative of our country. Even in the worst of times, she kept her head up high and her dignity, and continued to execute her job as the queen of her people. Ingrid has a lot of potential and it will be great to see her mature into a new aspect of her life now that pageants are over for her. She will be pursuing a career in acting and from the little we have seen in tv commercials and other events, with the proper training and preparation, she should shine in this as well. I wish her the best of luck with everything she does from now on and she will always be remembered as our queen for her grace, intelligence and extreme beauty. Great job, Ingrid!

Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2009 - The surprises at the preliminaries

I was delighted to watch the preliminaries of Miss Puerto Rico Universe because there were so many pleasant surprises. These were from girls who perhaps were under the radar and no one was talking much about them. Here is a few that caused a great impression and who I think may do well during the final on Wednesday night:

Quebradillas: Exotic, very tall, statuesque. Her catwalk was elegant and confident. It was impressive to see this woman in her swimsuit and evening gown. Great projection.

Luquillo: Although perhaps she over did it a bit during the swimsuit competition, she looked beautiful and had one of the best catwalks of the night. Her blue evening dress was a fantasy and she looked radiant.

Culebra: One of the best bodies of the night along with Miss San Juan and Miss Vega Baja. She looked prettier on TV than on her still pictures. I expect to see her in the top 20 at least. Very nice projection.

Morovis: No one talks about her but, to me, she was one of the best overall. She did flawlessly in both swimsuit and evening gown with a very professional catwalk. Excellent job.

Juana Diaz: A very nice surprise. this is a candidate that at first I didn't like, then after the reality she looked great. Her improvement is evident and she looked classy and like a top model during the preliminaries.

Gurabo: From day one, during the reality, this girl has been elegant and articulate. Facially, she is not as striking as others in this edition of the pageant, but she is regal, has a great body and presence, and I love her catwalk. Very impressive.

Let's see if any of these girls will continue to surprise us during the final of Miss Puerto Rico Universe.

Latinas rule in Miss International

According to the initial pictures that have been distributed in the last day or so from the Miss International pageant, the latin girls are a force to be reckon with. As always, girls from Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and Venezuela are simply stunning and causing a good impression.

This competition is just starting so anything can happen. For now good luck to all our beautiful girls from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Miss Puerto Rico Universe Preliminaries- Review

The competition is fierce this year as it was evidenced at last night's Miss Puerto Rico Universe's preliminaries. There are a lot of wonderful candidates this year and it is a pity that most of them may not have an opportunity to represent Puerto Rico internationally. After the swimsuit competition I have a list of over 20 girls who impressed me. The same with the evening gown.

Here are my impressions:

Swimsuit:
The best one here in projection and figure was Miss San Juan. She looked beautiful with a fit body and an amazing projection. No one else projected this good.

After San Juan, Ponce was amazing. What a presence.

Miss Culebra was a revelation with one of the best bodies and lots of projection. She looked great!

Guaynabo, another big surprise, someone I never paid any attention to. She is gorgeous, confident and has lots of projection.

Vega Baja, is simply stunning, but lacks projection. She could be the next Miss Puerto Rico if she improves on this.

Others that were strong were:

To me, Hatillo was the winner on this category. What a gorgeous, elegant evening gown. And she looked beautiful and classy. What an improvement.

Followed by Rio Grande, wearing a pink gown similar to what Penelope Cruz wore at the Oscars two years ago.

Adjuntas; Elegant black evening gown and she looked very beautiful.

Cabo Rojo and San Juan: Both wore pretty red gowns but I was hoping for more from these two front-runners. Still, you can't deny the crown is between these two.

Catano: Beautiful golden dress to match that beautiful face.

Gurabo- simple and elegant gray dress.

Guaynabo- She wore this beautiful white gown with grace and confidence. Great job!

Vega Baja- Not crazy about her gown but she looked gorgeous.

Others that were good:
Morovis
Lajas
Santurce

Not so good:
Promising girls like Ponce, Culebra and Arecibo were out-shined by extravagant gowns. Still Ponce is quite spectacular.

Barceloneta's gown was tacky (and what's with those white platform shoes??). Terrible.

Bayamon's dress was too busy and took away from her beautiful face. I wish she wore something more simple.

Juana Diaz: she looked fine in spite of her cheap looking gown.

Jayuya: What was that white and black mess?

Overall:
Cabo Rojo won best face, San Juan won best hair and Vega Baja won best legs. Judging from last night's show, it is no surprise that these three got awards as I think this is very likely our top three come October 22.

Preliminaries tonight!

I am super excited about watching tonight's Miss Puerto Rico Universe preliminaries on WAPA AMERICA. After I moved to New York many years ago, I had to watch the pageant and preliminaries through my mother's eyes as she would watch at home in Puerto Rico and I would call her so she could tell me what was going on. But this year, I am watching live and I am thrilled. Specially of a year like this in which there are no clear winners yet.

I am anticipating lots of surprises tonight with some of the hyped girls living up to the hype and others crashing faster than a defective kite. I am looking forward to seeing my favorites in action: Miss San Juan and Bayamon. I am also curious to see what all the hype is about for Miss Cabo Rojo, Miss Rio Grande and Vega Baja. I am anticipating Miss Adjuntas to shine and girls like Ponce, Catano and Camuy to surprise us. And there will be at least 2 or 3 girls who will come out of the nowhere and outshine some of the more obvious choices.

We'll see what happens.

Miss International 2008 begins!

The 48Th Miss International beauty pageant officially began its events with the first arrivals of candidates representing different parts of the world. Puerto Rico is well represented this year with the message boards' darling, Miriam "Mimi" Pabon, who is already creating a lot of anticipation by her fans at home and all over the world. For the last two years, Puerto Rico has been in the finals so this year we are all hoping for more. Good luck to Mimi and to all the other girls from the world competing to be the successor of current Miss International (from Mexico), Priscilla Perales. The rest of the best - The search for Miss Puerto Rico Universe

In the past few days I have posted my impressions of each of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe contestants that I think are top 15 material. However, there are other girls, not in my list, who I think may be possible surprises. Again, I won't include in my assessment the 5 girls who were fast tracked by the votes of the TV audience and who complete the 20 semi-finalists.

Corozal:

I love this girl. She is on of the most improved girls in this competition. She has lost tons of weight and has polished her figure and face. She is tall and regal and had on of the most memorable interviews with the judges during the reality show run. She could be a big surprise and go very far in the competition if she has the right projection because she has developed into a beautiful swan.

Coamo:

She has a striking face. Perhaps one of the most beautiful face in this edition and seems to have a lot of fans. Her downfall is her height (too short) and figure (needs to be fitter). She just needs to sound less rehearsed when speaking.

San Sebastian:

She is very outspoken and smart (Remember she was the one who confronted Miss San Juan). She also is very pretty and got many more fans after we saw her during the last Por La Corona show.

Villalba:

Gorgeous face but lacks preparation, communication skills and sophistication. Could be on the top 15 just because of her striking facial features and height. Still very raw, she should compete again in a few years and the story may be different.

Toa Baja: We all loved this girl when she first appeared in the reality show but witrh so much competition and so many girls, somehow she has be under the radar. She is very pretty and has lots of potential. Could easily be on the top 15 list.

And here are my thoughts the final 5 girls of my top 15 list. This is based on two categories:

Catano:

Why top 15?: Because she was a big surprise in the reality show winning two of the tests. She is extremely eloquent and smart, and has an amazing face. I love her Latina look and her fiery disposition. She could go far in this competition because she has lots of confidence.

What needs to improve: She seems shorter than most of the favorites, so working on looking taller through her wardrobe and in her projection so she doesn't get lost.

Arecibo:

Why top 15?; Because she comes across as very genuine, young and has an edge and is one of the most improved candidates. She is pretty and has a feisty personality.

What needs to improve: Her wardrobe and her speaking skills. She is still not polished in this area, sounding too strident at times and unsophisticated. Needs to work in looking more elegant and less casual and young.

Hatillo:

Why top 15?: Her face. She has striking features and like Arecibo has improved a lot. She also comes out as a smart girl.

What needs to improve: Her body, she looked short and a little overweight in the thighs. She seems low key with very poor projection. She looks scared rather than at ease.

Barceloneta:

Why top 15? She has a different look and gorgeous face. She is tall and seems to be under the radar but could be a big surprise. She has beautiful eyes and very nice, long legs.

What needs to improve: Her body, needs to firm up her body to look more toned. Her public speaking. She came out very unprepared during the interviews.

Ceiba:

Why top 15?: She is a different type of beauty, raw and natural. Under Magali's eye, she could be top notch. Great body.

What needs to improve: Projection. Doesn't seem to stand out from the others. Enhance her facial beauty.

Here is my assessment of the next 5 girls in my top 15 list before the Miss Puerto Rico Universe preliminaries this Saturday. Here are my thoughts on the next 5 picks based on two categories:

Adjuntas:

Why top 15?: Like Miss Santurce, she was a semifinalist in the Miss International pageant. Her interview in the reality show was great because she was able to project her youthful personality. She seems prepared and focused. She is also very pretty and has a different look that sets her apart.

What needs to improve: She looks older and doesn't project young. I liked her better when she was blonde, the hair color she has now washes out her face. Needs to work on her smile (can't wait to see her without her bracers). Hasn't being able to stand out in this group so she needs to work on her projection and getting a more fit figure to compete against taller, slimmer girls. I still think she will surprise many in the preliminaries so I am looking forward to see her performance.

Rio Grande:

Why top 15?: She has a very nice figure and a beautiful, exotic face.

What needs to improve: Needs better projection, seems low key every time they present her. Her public speaking skills were very weak in the reality show. She can get lost in an pageant like Miss Universe with girls with the same look. I think she is a little over-hyped in the message boards as there are other girls that outshine her.

Camuy:

Why top 15?: She is tall and looks great in everything I have seen her wearing. She also has a nice vulnerability that attracts people. Has nice features and looks like the whole package. Could be a surprise.

What needs to improve: Needs to be work on her public speaking skills so she doesn't come up as too "pageantry" or too "naive." ( Giving $50,000 to charity and not keeping anything???). Don't use the scar story anymore and move on so people don't see you and think about it. There is something about her face that looks a little too artificial, perhaps her nose.

Ponce:

Why Top 15?: Because everyone is so obsessed with height in this pageant and she has the right height. But she also has a great body and very nice facial features. A winning personality.

What needs to improve: Projection so we remember her the next time we see her. She is pretty but in a competition with so many gorgeous faces, she may not be beautiful enough.

San German:

Why top 15?: She is super tall and looks like Marianne Cruz (Miss Domininan Republic 2008) and we saw how far that girl go in MIss Universe. She is smart and eloquent.

What needs to improve: Like Ponce, needs to work on projection so we can remember her. Her facial beauty is her weakest point but I think all she needs to do is wear a different make up that will enhance her intriguing features and make her look softer.

Tomorrow: Catano, Arecibo, Hatillo, Barceloneta, Ceiba

As we get closer to Saturday's preliminaries of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant, I reflected on my preliminary list of the top 15 (does not include the fast track winners). Here are my thoughts on my first 5 picks based on two categories:

San Juan:

Why top 15?: In my eyes this girl can do no harm. She has an striking face and a nice figure. She is the model type that the Miss Universe Organization seems to be looking for. Her strongest assets are her beautiful face, her confidence and her smarts. If she makes her to top 5, she will be hard to stop.

Needs to improve: Her strongest asset could easily become her biggest downfall: Extra confidence. She needs to project more accessibility and connect with the people. Her smile is stiff and doesn't seem genuine. She should also watch her overall projection not to overdo it.

Bayamon:

Why Top 15?: She may be a long shot for the crown at this time, but I think Bayamon is the one who could be the big surprise of the night. Where most fans are divided between San Juan and Cabo Rojo, Bayamon could offer a fresh alternative with a beautiful face as striking as San Juan's and a nice projection like Cabo Rojo. She has classic beauty (very Denise Quinonez) and has projected a wonderful and smart personality all along. And, did I say she is also extremely charismatic?

Needs to improve: Her wardrobe seems to be a little too flashy at times and wears too many accessories. Also she should work on polishing her style all together.

Cabo Rojo:

Why Top 15?: She is pretty, tall, has a nice figure and and exotic, Latina look. She has also pageant experience and a wonderful projection. No matter where she is, she seems to get attention, she stands out (without trying too much) and that is very important in this pageant. She projects warmer and more accessible than San Juan and this could be a determining factor.

Needs to improve: Sometimes I worry that if she wins the crown she will get lost among so many other Latina contestants with the same look in Miss Universe, so perhaps she should work on defining her look to make her look more unique. While San Juan and Bayamon exude strong personalities Cabo Rojo seems to be weak on this aspect. Her interview in the reality show was fine but not memorable.

Vega Baja:

Why top 15?: She is tall, has a beautiful face and the best legs of the pageant. A diamond in the raw, under Magali's hand, she could turn up to be a front runner in Miss Universe.

Needs to improve: In such a strong year, she needs to work on a stronger projection and in her public speaking. I believe confidence and beauty are going to prevail this year, so I would recommend that she will develop more confidence because she has plenty of beauty.

Santurce:

Why top 15?: She has previous experience and was a semifinalist in Miss International (no small feat). She is also well known in the fashion world in Puerto Rico so people connect with her. She projects herself very sweet. Of all the candidates, I will say she is probably the sexier one. She has a nice body and a pretty face.

Needs to improve: Too sexy for this pageant. She may need to tone it to tone it down. She also is too short and and her extremities look short too. She should work on wearing clothes that will make her look taller and slimmer. She has a beautiful, voluptuous body but still needs to lose some inches from her thighs.

Tomorrow: Adjuntas, Rio Grande, Camuy, Ponce, San German

Por la Corona announces five audience faves!

Last night the representatives from the towns of Caguas, San Lorenzo, Carolina, Salinas and Naguabo are closer to the crown of Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2009. These five girls were the top five with most votes from the TV audience who weeks after week followed the drama and excitement behind the famous Puerto Rican pageant. The big surprise was that the most beautiful one of the 12 qualifying girls, Miss Bayamon, didn't make it. She is a stunner and last night looked flawless.

The five girls that made it all looked very nice but none of that group, in my opinion, is a potential Miss Universe. Salinas has a beautiful face but lacks projection and still can't seem to be able to speak in front of a camera. Caguas is exotic and gorgeus, but looked short and still needs to lose weight specially in her thighs and legs. Naguabo may be very smart and eloquent but does not stand out. San Lorenzo is very cute and very smart but I don't see her as a finalist as the competition is too strong. Carolina is charming and comes out as very sweet but she will get lost in a crowd of beautiful girls because she looks plain at times.

The stand out were the ones that we were only able to watch for a few seconds. Those are the rest of the girls that complete the 70 something contestants this year. We were able to enjoy a brief and quick exposure to these girls during the show's opening. Already we can see some of the amazing transformations of some of them, in particular Miss San German and Miss Ponce. Others that looked great were San Juan (still a front-runner), Cabo Rojo (Pretty but was expecting more), Villalba (stunning face), Santurce (supercute), Barceloneta (nice polishing), Toa Baja, Vega Baja (she is gorgeous and has an unique look), Camuy and Rio Grande (pretty but looked too serious though). Hatillo and Juana Diza from the group of 12, looked radiant.

It was thrilling to see them walk the runway with confidence. There were so many beautiful girls that I wish we had more time to appreciate each of them. I guess we'll have a chance next Saturday, October 18 during the preliminaries.

The Moment of Truth

Last night WAPA TV (WAPA AMERICA in the states) aired the special edition of the reality show POR LA CORONA. The show, aptly titled "El Momento de la Verdad" (The Moment of Truth), focused on the selection of the 12 contestants who got the most votes from the audience. These 12 girls (8 were selected throughout 8 weeks and 4 were added from additional voting) will compete tonight (Saturday) for the audiences votes for 5 fast track positions in the semifinals of the Miss Universe Puerto Rico.

I have to say that I was a little confused by the show and the selection of the additional 4 girls to join the 8 previously chosen. A bigger group of contestants who had accumulated points from winning different tests during the past 8 weeks was narrowed down to 4 who got the most votes from the audience. In the bigger group two of the big favorites and front runners were included: Cabo Rojo and San Juan. However, neither of them made it to the additional 4 to join the rest of the group even though they have won multiple tests.

I know this is not indicative of anything and that this is based on votes from fans but considering the big support of these two girls in the message boards and the press, I was surprised not to see them in the selected group. Not a big deal, because we all know these two girls along with others like Santurce and Adjuntas are very possibly going to be on the list of finalists on October 22. It is probbly a strategy of the TV show's production team who knows that in order to keep everypne hooked, they needed to give oportunities to other girls to shine.

The 12 girls that will be competing tonight for the fast track positions are: Caguas, Juana Diaz, Las Marias, Arecibo, Coamo, Carolina, Bayamon, Naguabo, Salinas, San Lorenzo, Hatillo and Lares. It was nice to see how much the girls continue to prepare for the competition. Some of them have made some drastic changes in their appearance like Salinas, who went from blonde to brtunette to accentuate her beautiful eyes. Caguas has improved her speaking skills and looked beautiful last night. Hatillo, looks like has lost more weight but last night looked a little tired and old.

Of the 12 girls, the ones that stand out are Bayamon (beauty and personality), Caguas (sexy and improved), Carolina (love her disposition), Hatillo (not her best night but looked beautiful). Bayamon still shines over all of them and I think she will be in the top five of the final night, and who knows if she becomes the new MIss Puerto Rico Universe. She is simply beautiful but also has charm and personality to match. She could be a nice alternative to the two big favorites, San Juan and Cabo Rojo.

About San Juan and Cabo Rojo.

We only saw them briefly last night but the first thing I noticed when we saw the group shot is that Miss San Juan seemed to be as tall as Cabo Rojo. There has been so many detractors saying that she is too short for the competition but from what I saw last night, that's not the case. She looked very cute in her black mini dress and her hourglass figure. Her only flaw last night was her stiff smile that makes her look a little too plastic.

Cabo Rojo looked flawless. She is definitely ready for the crown. I still think that San Juan and Bayamon have more beautiful, striking faces, but Cabo Rojo has the "it" factor that we all saw in Zuleyka Rivera. She shines and always get your attention and is also very beautiful.

This competition is getting more and more interesting as it gets to final night.

Por la Corona Reality Show wraps up

The highly successful reality show, Por La Corona, comes to an end this weekend with a special airing tonight and tomorrow night. The show tonight will focus on the announcement of the girl with most votes that will be competing for one of the five fast-track slots reserved for the semifinalists. Tomorrow night, all girls that were voted by the audience and those with highest votes from the different smaller competitions will compete and five will be selected. Then on October 18, Miss Puerto Rico Universe will hold their preliminaries and 15 other girls will be selected to compete on the final night on October 22.

I have to say that this is one of the most exciting competitions of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant ever. The reality show has added another dimension to the competition, creating high expectations from the audience. Also, the fact that the pageant can now be seen through WAPA America in places outside Puerto Rico like New York, New Jersey, Chicago and Orlando is another contribution to the excitement around Miss Puerto ico Universe.

We have seen also an increase in the quality of the contestants which makes the competition stronger. Right now, there are no clear winner as it is hard to predict who may take it all with such front runners as Miss Cabo Rojo, San Juan, Santurce, Adjuntas, Bayamon, Ponce, Rio Grande, Vega Baja, Hatillo, etc. Any of these girls could do well in an international pageant. I am only sorry that so much quality may be wasted and not be sent to other important pageants other than Miss Universe.

And to top it all, all these anticipation is surrounded by rumors that Magali Febles, the controversial pageant director, may lose the franchise for Miss Puerto Rico Universe due to financial conflicts with the Miss Universe Organization. Beauty, drama and controversy!

The Queen of Beauty

Last night I saw Madonna's concert at the Madison Square Garden. This was the New York City segment of her Sticky and Sweet tour. Even though Madonna was not a beauty queen, to me, she epitomizes everything that has to do with beauty.

I have to say that I was dreading to see last night's concert because it was a weeknight, I had a couple of very busy weeks at work and was worried about leaving our two puppies alone for so long. But once I got into the MSG arena, I was glad I made it so far. Then her concert began and I was thrilled to be there.

At 50, Madonna still got it. She looks younger than ever, has amazingly fit body and energy, and as always, puts on a great show. Her music was blasting all over MSQ and sometimes I felt, all over NYC. I think Madonna doesn't get credit for her incredible artistry and talent. From swinging from poles, to jumping the rope, to singing the beautiful ballad from her film Evita, You Must Love Me, Madonna hooks you and never lets go.

The concert included old and new songs, many screen images and videos and lots of dancing and acrobatics. The highlights were her reinvention of her "old songs" (likes she refers to them). Borderline became a thrilling hard rock song while La Isla Bonita became an exotic, gypsy feast. Like a Prayer took an even stronger spiritual turn and left me wanting for more.

Por La Corona - Full Review

As we get closer to the October 18 preliminaries for the much anticipated Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant, I decided to compile all my reviews from the 8 groups competing for the crown. Here is a compilation of my reviews of each of the 8 groups of girls they were presented in WAPA TV's reality show, Por La Corona:

Group 1:

The first episode of WAPA's Miss Puerto Rico Universe's reality show aired tonight and already is making a splash. The show promises to be far more interesting and sophisticated than the boring Nuestra Belleza Latina (Univision's beauty pageant reality show). This one-hour episode allowed the viewer to watch a different aspect of beauty pageants- the contestants' lives and their preparation. Each episode will focus on a small group of girls who are all hoping to be the next Miss Puerto Rico Universe. Each candidate, representing a different town, is profiled and they each go through different tests that are part of their training and preparation. What makes this show different from others of this kind is that we see more of the training process as opposed to just the drama. Also, the fact that we fans and viewers get to vote for the five girls we like best is a plus. There is also a panel of judges composed of journalist Omar Matos, actress Sully Diaz (looking fabulous) and a guest judge (in tonight's show it was the controversal producer Topy Mamery). I just hope Omar Matos tones it down as he shouldn't try to become the Simon Cowell (American Idol) or its cheap imitation (Osmel Sousa) of this reality show.

In tonight's show, we saw girls from Rincon, Vieques, Hatillo, Gurabo, Guaynabo, Cayey, Rio Grande, Toa Alta and Caguas. They all show potential and transformation but only a few stand out from this group. My favorite so far from this initial group is the gorgeous Miss Hatillo, a brunette with bright eyes, a confident disposition and a face to kill for. She is a nice surprise!

Another contestant that captivated my attention for her exotic beauty (more so than her brain-she really messed up her answer when the judges asked her about what's different about latin women's beauty) was Miss Caguas, a "morena" who is simply gorgeous. However, she seems to have an attitude that eventually could be her downfall. When confronted by one of the teacher by her lack of dance skills she responded defiantly that while he may be an expert in dance and she was an expert in other things. Tell it like it is, girl!

The girls from Gurabo and Rio Grande are also impressive. Gurabo for her poise and elegance and Rio Grande for her similarity to Cynthia Olavarria, first runner-up in the Miss Universe 2005. However, she needs to work on her speaking skills as she projected a little bit unrefined.

Finally, I liked the nice presence former Miss Puerto Rico World, Jocelyn Montero, who is the perfect host for the show with her calm, beautiful and elegant projection.

Overall, I loved the show and I can't wait to see more. I am hookedI I hope the remaining 10 pisodes continue to be this good.

Group 2:

Now that all the excitement of the first airing of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe reality show is gone, I can see some of the flaws in this show after the second episode aired last Friday. For instance, what's up with the "aggressive" tone of the three judges? They come out as arrogant fools who ask very personal questions that are rarely asked in these type of pageants. To ask a girl, what would you say to your father who left you when you were a young girl is not only inappropriate but also unfair. At least all the girls knew how to handle these questions with ease, dignity and more class than the judges showed. To the girls 100 points and 0 to those three fools.

The tests that the girls go through are edited too fast and you can hardly appreciate their process. This is what makes shows like Survivor or Project Runway successful, you see them going through the actual tests as opposed to just letting the audience get a quick taste.

And now about the girls in this second group of candidates.

he standout was obviously Miss Cabo Rojo. Even though she is not a striking beauty she has a very exotic beauty and a very refined and confident attitude. Her body is almost perfect and she is very eloquent. Definitely she is living up to the hype.

Miss Barceloneta, who from this group has the best face, is gorgeous but lacks sophistication and comes out as rough, with more time and training she could be a strong contender.

Same goes with Miss Arecibo, who has a beautiful and soft profile, but then when she speaks looks unpolished. She has a nice face but her make up and arched eyebrows make her look too hard at times.

Overall, it's nice to learn more about these girls and hear them speak. I was so impressed by their intelligence and their vulnerability when answering personal questions. They all deserve 100 points. Miss Aguas Buenas stole my heart with her sweet and candid disposition, she truly represents the beautiful essence of the Puertorican woman.

Group 3:

The longer format and new night of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe reality show really works. We get a chance to hear more of the interview sections and to see the girls in action throughout the different tests they are put through. Congratulations to the production of this show and to WAPA for listening to the viewers' requests.

The acting test with Sara Pastor was amusing. Miss Adjuntas with her crying and screams seemed scarily real. She should have won this one. The red carpet test was fun too but I think the girls need to understand this is an opportunity to get photographed so going slower and posing more, is better than waving like crazy maniacs. None of them impressed me here.

And now for my humble review of the show:

The very bad: Again, Omar Matos. He is a terrible and annoying interviewer. His questions seem to be always loaded and too dramatic (What if you find your husband cheating with another man?) and sometimes unnecessary. Then he keeps telling the girls to listen to the questions but how are they going to do that if he keeps interrupting them? Then he gets upset with his fellow judges and states that the viewers want hard questions that no one have heard before in pageants. Well, guess what? Your questions tonight have been heard before many, many times. He also seems to love the sound of his on voice and most of the time, unfortunately, we hear more from him than the girls he's interviewing. What are two beautiful and intelligent women like Sully Diaz and Hilda Haddock wasting their time as judges in this show if Mr. Matos won't let them even ask questions?

The bad: Ingrid Marie as a teacher. She acted and sounded like a robot. No energy. She looked bored. We all know she is a a sweet person so having her act like a tough teacher was not in character. Let her be herself.

The good: The girls. Whether they are Miss Universe material or not, most of the girls project intelligence, preparation and candidness. Their profiles before they get interviewed are revealing of who these girls really are and give us a different way of seeing them. These come up as honest, real moments with each one of them.

The girls that got my attention:

Adjuntas is definitely a strong contender. Her interview was excellent and she came out genuine and candid. She has a beautiful face and eyes that make her stand out. Her downfall, her facial features are still a little too strong so she always looks like she is mad. This also makes her looks older. The other weakness, her body. It seems short and out of proportion with a shorter torso and longer legs. In the purple dress in the runway test she looked heavy and shapeless. However, the beautiful sun-dress she wore in the interview made her look impeccable. In her profile she claims her best attribute is that she is very natural, but she really doesn't look that way. I really would love to see this girl lose the arched eyebrows and tone up her body because beautiful she is.

Toa Baja. Although she is very natural and sweet, she looks and projects very young. She is indeed beautiful but needs more preparation and refinement, she also needs to be more aggressive and perky. Still, her interview was one of the best because we were able to see her inner beauty and her personality. However, if she wants to win she needs to work on projection and image.

Patillas and Fajardo: Both of them were nice surprises. However, I am grouping these two together because I can't remember who is Patillas and who is Fajardo because they looked very similar. So my recommendation is for both to work on creating an unique image that will set you apart. Other than that, they both have very striking faces and seemed confident.

Salinas. I think she has the most beautiful face in this group but as we all witnessed her interview skills are very weak and her projection is even weaker. Here is a girl who has so much potential if she gets out of her shell, gets fit and works on her nerves. Even with a very awkward interview, Miss Salinas managed to my opinion to give one of the most honest and real answers I have ever heard from a candidate in a beauty pageant. When asked what was her opinion about extramarital relationship, after stumbling and almost fainting, she responded that if there is no love in a relationship, people need to let each other know, before cheating on each other.

So far, in the first three groups only a few look look like potential for an international pageant like Miss Universe. In my opinion I am still waiting to see that girl who exudes Miss Universe all over. This is the way we need to see this girls, not as a future Miss Puerto Rico, but as a Miss Universe contender.

Group 4:

Saturday night the 4th group of candidates for the Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant was the focus of the popular TV reality show. It was another fun show to watch, especially when Miss Corozal, confronted by judge Omar Matos to say who she would eliminate from the competition, responded that she would eliminate him. With her candid answer she became every one's favorite after 4 weeks of enduring Mr. Matos' inappropriate questions and defiant behavior, someone finally said what we all were thinking: NO MORE MR. MATOS!! It was classic TV!

Miss Corozal was certainly one of the nice highlights of what initially seemed like a weak group of candidates. She not only was articulate, quick and smart, but also is elegant, poised and has very striking features. I hope that once her bracers are removed and her eyebrows are toned down so they don't look that arched, Miss Corozal, who claims has lost over 30 pounds for the competition, could definitely become a strong contender for the crown. She is someone to watch out. Good job!

Another nice surprise was Miss Juana Diaz, a professional model, who is extremely beautiful, fresh , tall and very elocuent. She is a breath of fresh air and exciting to watch on camera. Her transformation from her profile video to her interview with judges was quite impressive. She has classic beauty, grace and the smarts to be our next Miss Puerto Rico Universe. I am looking forward to see this girl in action.

Another girl who impressed me was Miss Aibonito, who has some resemblance to Uma Blasini, Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2007, and who won the 100 points from the judges for her interview skills. She is poised and very articulate, and has a beautiful face.

From last week's group, I was surprised that Las Marias won most votes from the viewer. I wonder how much of that is friends and family voting for candidates. I loved Miss Salinas, she looked beautiful. Unfortunately, Adjuntas, didn't look that great on Saturday night.

And to end my review, here's some advice to Mr. Matos. If you are trying to become the controversial judge of the show, then you need to remain calmed and don't lose your cool when confronted. This is was makes controversial judges like Simon Cowell (American Idol) and Miss Venezuela Diva Osmel Sousa, so good at it. You are no match to these two and you come out as a cheap copycat. Your anger at Miss Corozal and your fellow judges was noticeable and embarrassing and then trying to fix it by "congratulating" the candidates made it worse. You are still the weakest link of the show. All girls responded to your questions of who they would eliminate with grace and politeness while you were rude and again, inappropriate. To accuse them of being dishonest is out of place. A true beauty queen will respond in the same way all these girls did because part of being a beauty queen requires to have a lot of diplomacy. I am surprised that as a judge in a beauty pageant you don't understand that.

Group 5:

There is a new girl in town and her name is Jennifer Colon! Jennifer is San Juan's representative for the Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2009 pageant. As witnessed last night, all the hype and anticipation around this girl was right. Miss San Juan is not only a strikingly gorgeous brunette with the most beautiful face of the pageant this year but she is also poised, elegant, has a great body and height. She is also smart and quick as demonstrated in her interview with the judges by challenging Mr. Matos to "test" her knowledge on current events. She not only reminds me of Dayanara Torres (Miss Universe 1993) in her features but also in Dayanara's spunky and confident personality.

Miss San Juan has already being causing some controversy around the other girls because after last week's presentation show she became a huge favorite of the press. This caused friction and tension among the girls in group 5 of the reality show Por La Corona. Some of the girls, in particular a feisty Miss San Sebastian, claimed that Miss San Juan didn't seem to want to interact with the rest of the girls while Miss San Juan clarified that she felt things have changed since the presentation show and that the other girls were alienating her. Whatever the real situation is (or perhaps it was greatly exaggerated for the benefit of the cameras), I can't help but being fascinated by Miss San Juan. Finally, a beauty queen for the new millennium, a girl who is not afraid to say that this is a competition and that everyone there wants to win. Her honesty when confronting the girls and during her interview was refreshing. Without any doubts Miss San Juan is very focused, she knows this is a competition and she is focused to win it. She won two of the "tests" of the week including the interview with the judges. I love this girl and I think she could easily win this pageant but her biggest challenge in the next few weeks is to show another side of her that is not overconfident but more tender and accessible, something that will help her connect with the people.

There were other surprises in this group of contestants, starting with also outspoken Miss San Sebastian.

I first noticed her during the first photo shoot and was enchanted by her beautiful face. Where did she come from out of the sudden? We haven't heard about this girl so far? She looks and talks a lot like 80's american actress Jamie Gertz (Square Pegs, Less than Zero).

She is also smart and feisty and gave a great interview but her downfall is that she still needs to refine her speaking skills by toning down the pitch of her voice (sometimes it was so strident it was annoying) and her diction. Overall, Miss San Sebastian, is definitely a potential finalist (she won one of the tests in a tie with Miss San Juan and was among the 3 top interviews). I don't see her winning but she could do really well in the competition.

Others in this group that made some kind of impact were:

Miss Ponce: Charming personality, beautiful body and great height (6'2?)

Miss Quebradillas: When I first saw her pictures I didn't think she was strong but after watching her on TV I appreciated her exotic look and bubbly personality. She also has an amazing figure and is one of the tallest girls in the competition.

So, at this moment, and without having seen the rest of the candidates, I will say that Miss San Juan is getting closer to the crown, followed very closely by Miss Cabo Rojo (Mayra Matos). The competition between these two girls could be fierce. But there are others that won't make this easy because there are also strong contenders. We'll see what happens when we are able to see other favorites like Misses Santurce, Camuy and Vega Baja in action.

Group 6:

Unfortunately, last night's edition of the reality show Por La Corona didn't produce any big surprises. Most of the girls in this group competing for the Miss Puerto Rico Universe title have pretty faces and nice figures but they all seem to have similar looks and images which prevented them from standing out. After the show was over, it was hard for me to remember who as who as they all looked the same and even sounded the same. Then, when it comes to the interview, most of them failed.

In terms of striking beauty only two impressed me: Villalba and Guanica. However, Villalba was probably the biggest disappointment of the evening. I would say that Villalba probably has one of the most beautiful faces of this competition but her interview skills are not her strong assets. She couldn't make anything she was saying making sense. She called herself a 'jibara' and didn't know what that really meant. She couldn't answer the questions with confidence or with any indication of coherence. She is completely unprepared and I doubt that with a month to go she will be ready for such a strong competition this year. She should try again another year.

Guanica was probably the only nice surprise of the evening. She is quite charming and has a very pretty face. She looks much better on TV than in her pictures so no one was noticing her. She should work on her interview skills as she tends to talk to repeat herself a lot.

About the other girls:

Carolina: She has pageant experience before so she knows what she's doing. Born and raised in the Bronx, her Spanish needs work but she managed to give a nice interview. I would recommend that she works on not sounding too much like a beauty queen because her answers seemed a little fake. She is pretty but not memorable.

Camuy: She is tall and has a nice figure. She is also charming but looks older for her age and needs to work on her projection. And for the first time I agree with judge Omar Matos. I don't believe that her answer about giving $50,000 to charity was completely honest.

Naguabo; Sorry, but to me she was plain and didn't cause much of an impression. However, she did give the best interview.

Luquillo: Pretty girl but perhaps too short for this competition. With so many other girls who have the same look she can get lost in the crowd but she is very pretty indeed.

Morovis: Again, another pretty girl but not a coherent thought on her brain.

Naranjito: Seemed to have memorized her answers and that's why her memory failed.

Juncos: Very beautiful girl but she is quite in the petite size and needs more projection.

Group 7:

Miss Cabo Rojo and Miss San Juan need to start worrying. There is a new girl who can take it all away from them, Miss Bayamon.

As witnessed during the airing of last night's reality, Por La Corona, Miss Bayamon, a beautiful brunette who reminded me a lot of Denise Quinonez when she was selected Miss Puerto Rico, is a force to reckon with. Not only a charming, spontaneous and eloquent girl, Miss Bayamon is also smart, funny and has an impressive classic beauty. And, did I mention a killer smile? From this group, she is the stand out leaving the others behind (except maybe Catano). Miss Bayamon came out as a confident and very focused candidate, who is now, along with San Juan, one of my top favorites for the crown of Miss Universe Puerto Rico.

But there were other girls that really did well too. Here are my impressions:

Catano: For weeks we have seen pictures of this girl and how she has improved. Last night, she showed evertyone that she is too a strong contender. The winner of two of the tests including best interview, Miss Catano, has an exotic look and is simply enchanting. She projects with confidence and is extremely well informed and outspoken. With the right preparation and image development, Miss Catano could be a great contestant in Miss Universe. Very well done.

Culebra: Reminds me of last year's Amanda Diaz. Same look and facial features. She is also smart, projects really well. Her nose may need some work to soften her facial features but this girl has a great disposition and beautiful body. Very nice surprise.

San German: Tall and impressive, she looks a lot like Marianne Cruz, 2nd runner up in Miss Universe from Dominican Republic. With preparation, this girl could become another one to watch out for. She was enchanting in her interview and seemed at ease and secure. Good job! Another nice surprise.

Group 8:

Trujillo Alto: What a charming, intelligent girl. Not only impressively beautiful but also has charisma, confidence and spontaneity. Like Miss Bayamon last week, she is among the most candid and intelligent girls in this competition. Her only weakness is her body. She needs to continue to work on it and get fitter. Like the judges said, there is something about her. She has the "it" factor.

Santurce: No surprises here other than the hype is worth it. No wonder she was a Miss International semifinalist. She is very pretty and has a nice personality and sensuality. Should do very well but in a year with so much competition she can be bumped from one of the finalists positions. She should work on her body.

Lajas: Beautiful, tall, exotic "triguena" with a sweet disposition and confidence. A diamond in the rough with lots of potential. Needs to continue working on her public speaking.

Vega Baja: I was hoping for more, she needs to work on her public speaking and in her projection. Another stunning "morena" who with more preparation could take it all from the more experienced. Beautiful face. At first her smile seemed too stiff and fake but when she loosened up, she looked simply gorgeous.

Dorado: Very pretty girl and a beautiful body. She handled herself extremely well during the interview when the judges lost their cool and began to argue with each other. She showed them what it means to be classy.

After having seen all the contestants for the MIss Puerto Rico Universe crown through WAPA TV's reality show, I have come up with who I think is the one to beat. Of course, things could change after the October 18 preliminaries.

One will think that because of her great support in the message boards that Miss Cabo Rojo would be at the top of my list, but I still think that the one to beat is Miss San Juan. Jennifer Colon not only has one of the most beautiful faces in the pageant this year but also has a model look and is extremely intelligent and quick with her answers. This is something that is a big advantage. In interviews alone I didn't see any other girl who topped her in the reality show (the other two who really did a nice job were Bayamon and Trujillo alto) Miss San Juan was candid, quick and herself.

I'll be watching very closely on October 18!

Por La Corona - Group 8 Review

And we have finally seen all the girls who will be competing in the Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant with the airing tonight of the WAPA TV's reality show, Por La Corona. With additional surprises, the competition looks fierce and exciting.

The highlights from this group:

About the judges: I am so glad that we are nearing the end of the show because I don't know how much longer I can handle Omar Matos' volatile and angry attitude. I hope he is taking something for your blood pressure because one of these days he's going to explode. And Mr. Matos, please remember to be a always a gentleman when you are surrounded by women.

Sully looked bored and out of it. And Leo Fernandez, what a buffoon he is. The questions got more inappropriate and repetitious as the judges tried to stole each other's thunder. Next time, get someone who really knows about pageants and beauty. These judges' questions continue to be offensive and inappropriate. I doubt these are not the kinds of questions that are asked at Miss Universe. Really embarrassing!

A queen with no castle

As of yesterday, a location for the October 18 preliminaries for MIss Puerto Rico Universe haven't been identified. After an announcement was made a few weeks ago that the preliminaries competition was to take place at the University of Puerto Rico, that didn't happen (apparently the theater has some damage that needed fixing that could affect the girls' security). So now, Magali and her staff, are looking for a new place. According to the press, she is still looking for a location with no success. Apparently all the various possible venues are booked.

It is sad when a pageant as important as this is, that has given Puerto Rico so much glory, can't even fine a home for their preliminaries. I bet that if this were a sport without an arena, this would be different. Isn't there an adequate space in Puerto Rico for this kind of event? Anywhere? I guess we have to have a current Miss Universe to remember how proud we feel when we have a winner, otherwise, the pageant is just an afterthought for many.

Is she over-hyped?

Without any doubt, Miss Cabo Rojo, Mayra Matos, is a beautiful girl and a strong contender for the Miss Puerto Rico Universe title. She is tall, poised, has a nice projection, seemed confident during the reality show, and has pageant experience. All of these are strong points on her favor that could make her win. However, is she the one to beat?

According to polls in the message boards and comments, she is. A lot of fans are singing her praise, declaring her as the next Miss Puerto Rico, and some are going as far as saying she would be the next Miss Universe. But in a year in which we have so many girls competing and so many nice surprises, is it fair to say she is the one?

I personally think that Miss Cabo Rojo is stunning and has a beautiful, striking look, but there are other girls in this competition who have more beautiful faces than hers. This competition is not just about being tall but that seems to be the biggest criteria used by many to justify Mayra's triumph.

Don't get me wrong. If she wins I am going to be happy as she is a strong contender but I am intrigued by what other girls like Miss San Juan or Bayamon could do in an international competition. For now, I do think she may be over-hyped! Let's wait to see what happens on October 18 during preliminaries before we declare a winner.

Miss Philippines quits!

As reported by ABS-CBN News Online, Philippines representative to the Miss World pageant, 17 year old Janina San Miguel, has resigned due to "personal reasons" and the "demise of her grandfather." If you recall, Janina was the contestant who like in the Miss Teen USA last year, fumbled her words and gave an incoherent answer to her final question. In spite of that, she ended up winning the pageant.

This created a major controversy in the Phillipines about whether a contestant should be expected to know English. Many praised Janina because of her effort in trying to answer a question struggling with a broken English.

Poll results indicate Miss San Juan is strongest contender

According to our poll of which candidate from Miss Puerto Rico Universe would be the best candidate against newly selected Miss Mexico and Miss Venezuela, the answer was Miss San Juan. Of course, this is just a poll and, unfortunately, only 10 people voted (to whom I am very grateful!). So in no way this represents the larger community of fans and missiologists following this pageant.

Our poll offered 3 choices: Misses San Juan, Cabo Rojo and Rio Grande. Out of the 10 total votes received 7 votes went to Miss San Juan and 3 votes went to Miss Cabo Rojo. Miss Rio Grande received no votes.

In the message boards there is a weekly poll after each episode of the Miss Puerto Rico Universe reality show is aired. On the most recent poll, Miss Cabo Rojo remains the top choice, followed very closely by Miss San Juan. The race continues as other beautiful contender like Miss Bayamon and Catano emerged and not discounting other beauties like Adjuntas, Santurce, Corozal and Ponce.

I have updated my list of top girls for the Miss Puerto Rico Universe title (right hand, below My Profile and WOW Factor). The quality of the girls keep improving and every week there are very nice surprises. I still think that only a few that are, at the moment, Miss Universe material, but that doesn't mean in the next couple of weeks before the final selection is made that we won't see others emerge as potential contenders.

Please note that I have returned to to 15 picks instead of 10 being that there are so many girls who have impressed me. With this week's revision, instead of going in alphabetical order, I will begin to place them from my top choice for the crown and in descending order. The order, of course, will probably change as we move closer to October 22.

In regards to last night's episode, I am glad to see that the questions are not dominated by Omar Matos and that the other two judges (Sully, and guest judge, Leo Fernandez) had a chance to talk with the candidates. I love Sully's patience and warmth to the candidates, very much needed in an antagonistic environment. Considering his harsh reputation as a paparazzi, Leo Fernandez was not terrible. In fact, he did better than Omar Matos, who once again lost his cool during one of the interviews.

Overall, I love to be able to see the girls up close every week but with so many candidates and a few more weeks to go until final night, I am beginning to get anxious.

There many girls who are top 15 material (or top 20), but the competition and judging needs to focus on who is the beat one to compete in Miss Universe. Unfortunately, i believe, there are only a few with that a potential.

Taken over three years ago, the Venezuelan beauty never expected that they would float all over the world because of her new role as Miss Universe. Although still a beauty, looking at her recent pictures during her visit to Singapore, Dayana looks tired and kind of a mess. A far cry from the glamorous girl who won the crown a few months ago. I miss those early years in which the Miss Universe queens would always look chic, sharp and elegant. It seems that with time, we have lost that sense of style and glamour.

"Jibara" power

Since the reality show Por La Corona aired last week, there is one contestant in this year's Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant that has everyone talking. She is Miss Villalba, a stunning and tall girl who has one of the most beautiful faces of the competition. But what got the attention of the fans of the show and some in the message boards is the fact that Miss Villalba self-proclaimed herself as a "jibara."

For those of you who are not familiar with this term, in Puerto Rico we call "jibaros" the people from the center of the island and who live in the mountains. The term has also a cultural connotation, a "jibaro" is known as someone who may not have the same education or sophistication that those who live in the metropolitan area or the San Juan area, but are smart, quick and hard workers. They are also proud and very patriotic. Unfortunately, the term is used sometimes in a derogative way to imply someone lacks education.

Many in the message boards are now saying that perhaps we should chose Miss Villalba as the new Miss Puerto Rico because she will truly represent the Puerto Rican woman. They think that with 8 months of preparation for Miss Universe she would be a strong contender for the international crown. It seems that a small campaign has begun to crown Miss Villalba as the new Miss Puerto Rico Universe.

It all sounds like a beautiful dream. The "underdog" wins the crown. But I think it won't work.

Based on the inteview during the show last Saturday, I saw a very unprepared girl who couldn't even articulate why she saw herself as a "jibara." When asked, she just repeated herself and didn't make any sense. You can fix her posture and condition her body to be fit for a fierce competition like Miss Universe, but elocuence and mental agility are more than just a skill. In Miss Villaba, I did not see the most beautiful aspects of what I think a "jibara" is: quickness, intelligence and a sense of self. And I think I know about "jibaros" as I grew up around grandparents and many cousins who were proud "jibaros" from Lares.

We can't confuse patriotism with having the best contender for the Miss Universe crown. Miss Universe is not looking for a country's cultural symbol but for a spoke person who can articulate thoughts and answer questions with confidence and represent their organization for a year. They are looking for a universal girl who can represent all of us in the world. I don't doubt that Miss Villaba has intelligence but her lack of information and clarity demonstrated during the interview last week presented a very unprepared girl who unfortunately is not in the same league as other candidates this year.

It may sound harsh but it takes more than training to make such an unprepared girl into a Miss Universe contender. Wanting the crown is not enough.

Was she the right selection?

After the crowning of Karla Carillo as Mexico's representative in the Miss Universe pageant, the reaction to her selection has been mixed. Based on the pictures that have been generating in the message boards, many think that perhaps Perla Beltran (selected as Miss Mexico World)) should have been the one to go to Miss Universe instead of Karla. Perla, a gorgeous brunette with big, bright eyes, is simply stunning and looked like the one to beat.

The new Miss Mexico reminds me a little bit of Laurie Simpson, Miss Puerto Rico 1988 and finalist in Miss Universe. She then became Puerto Rico's only Miss International. Karla has striking similar features and, being a blond, has a different and marketable look that perhaps Miss Universe is looking for after the last three crowned Miss Universe have dark hair. So, in that case, Karla's selection may have been a strategy.

Anyhow, I agree that Perla looks much more beautiful than Karla, but there is so much time still for Miss Universe that I am sure, like with Elisa Najera, Lupita Jones will transform this girl into another strong contender.

Both girls, competing in this years Miss Puerto Rico Universe, seem to be head to head in the race for the coveted crown. Remember Susie Castillo?

Beautiful Susie Castillo, a former Miss USA and now an actress, is also an author. She just published a book title, "Confidence is Queen" about developing confidence in your life. The book also includes stories from her summers in Puerto Rico.

As you may know, Susie is from Puerto Rican descent. She is currently living in Los Angeles and you can see her in the TV show "House of Payne" and in the upcoming movie, "The Heartbreaker." For more on this story go to The Eagle Tribune.

The strongest contestant

As we continue evaluating all the candidates for the Miss Puerto Rico Universe crown through pictures, videos or the reality show, we judge them based on beauty, charisma, personality, fitness, projection and intelligence. We haven't seen all the 70 something girls competing in this year's edition but already we have plenty of favorites. However, there are three girls that seem to be on everyone's top 3 lists: Cabo Rojo, San Juan and Rio Grande.

Cabo Rojo is the message boards' favorite, consistently placing as the one to beat in the top 15 lists. Miss San Juan is the press favorite and most controversial candidate by her focused attitude. Miss Rio Grande is a fresh face with a charming personality. Either one of these three can win the crown but, can they be a strong contestant in Miss Universe?

There is another way to judge these girls also and that is against their competition should they go to Miss Universe next year. So far we both Mexico and Venezuela have selected their representatives and they seem to be girls with lots of potential (and beauty) to become the next Miss Universe. So, in assesing the Puerto Rican contestants, perhaps we should be thinking on which one of these girls would be the strongest contestant against the competition. Of course there are many other girls yet to be selected to represent their countries next year in the Miss Universe pageant so this is not a serious consideration, but for now, and just for fun, let's measure these three girls (San Juan, Cabo Rojo and Rio Grande) against the newly selected Miss Mexico and Miss Venezuela. The purpose here is not to say who of the three countries is the best (we will have plenty of time for that later) but to select who of the three Miss Puerto Rico Universe candidates may be the strongest candidate to compete with Mexico and Venezuela.

Por La Corona - Group 6 Review

Unfortunately, last night's edition of the reality show Por La Corona didn't produce any big surprises. Most of the girls in this group competing for the Miss Puerto Rico Universe title have pretty faces and nice figures but they all seem to have similar looks and images which prevented them from standing out. After the show was over, it was hard for me to remember who as who as they all looked the same and even sounded the same. Then, when it comes to the interview, most of them failed.

In terms of striking beauty only two impressed me: Villalba and Guanica. However, Villalba was probably the biggest disappointment of the evening. I would say that Villalba probably has one of the most beautiful faces of this competition but her interview skills are not her strong assets. She couldn't make anything she was saying making sense. She called herself a 'jibara' and didn't know what that really meant. She couldn't answer the questions with confidence or with any indication of coherence. She is completely unprepared and I doubt that with a month to go she will be ready for such a strong competition this year. She should try again another year.

Villalba

Guanica was probably the only nice surprise of the evening. She is quite charming and has a very pretty face. She looks much better on TV than in her pictures so no one was noticing her. She should work on her interview skills as she tends to talk to repeat herself a lot.

About the other girls:

Carolina: She has pageant experience before so she knows what she's doing. Born and raised in the Bronx, her Spanish needs work but she managed to give a nice interview. I would recommend that she works on not sounding too much like a beauty queen because her answers seemed a little fake. She is pretty but not memorable.

Camuy: She is tall and has a nice figure. She is also charming but looks older for her age and needs to work on her projection. And for the first time I agree with judge Omar Matos. I don't believe that her answer about giving $50,000 to charity was completely honest.

Naguabo; Sorry, but to me she was plain and didn't cause much of an impression. However, she did give the best interview.

Luquillo: Pretty girl but perhaps too short for this competition. With so many other girls who have the same look she can get lost in the crowd but she is very pretty indeed.

Morovis: Again, another pretty girl but not a coherent thought on her brain.

Naranjito: Seemed to have memorized her answers and that's why her memory failed.

Juncos: Very beautiful girl but she is quite in the petite size and needs more projection.

Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2008 is crowned!

Beautiful Karla Carillo, from Jalisco, won the title of Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2008 last night and the opportunity to represent her country in next year's Miss Unverse pageant. Karla, a blondish 20 year old, beat favorite Perla Beltran from Sinaloa. However, Perla, was crowned as Mexico's representative to the Miss World pageant next year. Although, I personally think Perla Beltran has a more striking beauty, I think that Nuestra Belleza strategy to pick a blonde for Miss Universe is a good one. In recent years, most Miss Universe queens have been brunette or with brown hair.

Former Miss World scared of the runway

You would think that a former Miss World would be at ease in the fashion runways but as reported by A Pakistan News, Priyanka Chopra, former Miss World from India, is afraid of the runway. In a candid interview, she confided that she is out of practice and nervous about walking the runway. Ironically, that's exactly was Priyanka was doing at the time of interview. She just finished walking on a fashion show for designer Ritu Kumar. She claims she is not a "ramp-friendly person" and that she is most comfortable with filming a movie. Miss Australia's date with a 50 year old

I posted a few weeks ago that the current Miss Australia was auctioning herself for a date. This of course was for charity reasons and the lucky bidder was 50 year old, Brett Edwards. News.com.au reported about the date and according to the above picture, they look like they had a great time. The final bid was $1600.00 which I think it is quite a bargain for a date with beautiful Laura Dundovic (who as we know was a semifinalist at the Miss Universe pageant last July).
